Most people don't do instruments by ear; in fact, it' pretty much impossible unless you're some kind of savant. Most people either NSFImport the instruments or use Audacity to look at their waveforms. As a side note, is there any reason why you need to imitate instruments exactly? Just wondering. O...

The Pxx values are in hexadecimal. x80 is "normal" and corresponds to 0. x81 corresponds to +1. x7E and x7C correspond to -2 and -4. And so on. Note that values in the Instrument Editor's Pitch Sequence editor are relative. Input +1, and the pitch is now +1 relative to the note played. In...
