I'm sorry, but this is actually the best advice. Practice, learn, imitate, copy, cover, whatever. Do what you must, think up melodies that sound good, don't mash the keyboard and claim it's music or "art". Just Get good, depending on what your method is.

I've been doing this for years, and I've only done 4 originals, all of which are stale, dried up horseshit.
Slowly working on a thing called "FaMIGA".

Hi! I'm not really active here anymore but I still make music. Nowadays I mostly make dubstep with emphasis on good melodies and chord progressions.

Spoiler alert: There are no shortcuts, and Sturgeon's Law will apply to everything you do. But that's kind of the point -- you keep using it, gain XP and over time your skill and style will "level up" and "evolve" to the point where you can quickly assemble a workable song.

Couldn't agree more. Trackers have a steep learning curve, but once you put together all the small things you learn over time (YEARS even) then you can produce some okay sounding music. I still have so much to learn as I'm sure many of us do, but we wouldn't be here if we didn't feel the drive to discover the secrets of 8-bit music. It's a long journey, so take a seat and enjoy the ride. The bus is big enough for all of us. ;)

One of the things I found most helpful early on was to try to reproduce existing songs as closely as possible, and also to dissect as many songs as I could get in the native tracker format -- nothing helps you learn like seeing exactly how someone else produced a sound that you like.

Start out by doing some covers! Not having to come up with an original melody/progression takes a lot of pressure off and lets you focus on learning your software of choice. Once you feel comfortable moving around the tracker, you'll find it's a lot easier to be creative.

Also, Mudkip, I tried loading up your example tune and I get an error telling me the file was created with a newer version of famitracker than I have -- even though I have the most up to date one from their website. Any idea what's up with that?
