A-3 4xx workaround?

Postby [MetoolDaddy] » Fri Feb 19, 2016 12:37 pm

Due to a memory write issue in 2A03, 4xx effect makes a variety of notes including A-3 sound choppy with 4xx effect.

Is there a way to fix it a similiar feature to use?

Lower the vibrato width and/or change the pitch of the note with the Pxx effect.
Sarumi is best ship; confirmed and manifested.

An other way to get around this could be done by adding another type of vibrato to Famitracker using alternating up-down hardware sweeps. Crossing an 8-bit period boundary can be achieved without causing a phase reset click, if a sweep unit does it.

I almost never use vibrato
But actually, I think you could do it with a vibrato in the pitch setting of an instrument?

Setting the vibrato depth to 1 or 2 seems to make it sound right. Any higher makes it sound choppy

Don't mean to argue(again), but how is this helpful?

Never using vibrato is like, one of the reasons why you don't improve much, seriously. My very first FTM uses vibrato, in fact.

The cause behind the issue is a hardware issue, i.e. the high bits of the frequency value gets changed. This could not be fixed.

On the other hand (about what za909 said): up/down hardware sweep itself seems to be emulated incorrectly in both official FT and 0CC.
nsf.nesbbs.com under reconstruction, better player might be available in the future.

VRC6 PWM is GAY because it has colours of the rainbow in the NSFPlay keyboard visualizer.

Yes because Hxx and Ixx automatically rewrite the high period and reset the phase even though this is not necessary to start the sweep, only the hw. envelope and the length counter.
Also, the sweep is not quite the same for the two pulse channels.

w7n: The reason I rarely use it is because I have a bit of a hard time making it sound good. I'm starting to use it more, though.

For me the best are 483 and 453, most other ones sound bad
