Refined Swing/Jazz Theory

Postby Mentlegen » Fri Feb 24, 2017 4:57 am

So my friend Makman and I have discovered and refined a swing theory for Famitracker.

Makman discovered it by accident after I taught him how to use the Fxx command.

So here is how it works.

Initially, He made this pattern
F07 (1st Value)
F04 (2nd Value)
F03 (3rd Value)
F02 (4th Value)

now this produces moderate swing.
the reason why this works is because that F04+F03 =F07 (3+4=7) and the fourth value sets the interval swing speed.

This theory applies to any swing algorithm.
the qualifications are

1st Value = odd number
1st Value = 2nd Value + 3rd Value
2nd Value ≠ 3rd Value
4th Value Typically = 01,02,03 *
2nd Value > 3rd Value
2nd Value must be on top
*F02 is recommended

With this knowledge, a more advanced swing can be achieved with

F09 (1st Value)
F05 (2nd Value)
F04 (3rd Value)
F02 (4th Value)

Also, the larger Value 1 is, the thicker the swing will be.

This is only one type of swing theory, but it works for most evenly spaced songs.

The reason your swing formula works is not because the second and third value added together are equal to the first value. It's because it happens to follow this formula:

value 1 + value 2 > value 3 + value 4
Hi! I'm not really active here anymore but I still make music. Nowadays I mostly make dubstep with emphasis on good melodies and chord progressions.

value 1 + value 2 > value 3 + value 4 although this is true, this only applies to make a topheavy swing. So if you wanted to make the 3 and 4 beats swung you would reverse the pattern
