[VRC7] Why some VRC7 sound is different both FT and NES-Emulator?

Postby GOZAHAND » Mon Aug 03, 2015 4:17 am

I made FTM file include VRC7 sound, and exported NSF File.

And run NSF File with VirtuaNES emulator, It's sound was different with FT.

Built-in #15 Chorus is veryyy different.

in FT, it is long-sustained, but in NES-Emul is sound is decay fast.
I didn't use Release note, and both side sound setting were 44.1KHz sample rate, 16-bit sample size.

Why?
Why both side sound are different? :?

Some emulators use extremely old data of using the instrument patches in the YM2413 FM chip instead of the custom Konami patches used in VRC7. Some use somewhat old data of Kevtris's tests on getting the correct FM patches used on VRC7. Rainwarrior had somewhat recently done his own extensive tests on getting the patches as close as possible to what the VRC7 does. We have not yet decapped an actual VRC7 and conclusively read the data as it exists on the chip to know the true values, so Rainwarrior's tests are the closest we have for the moment.

Famitracker uses Rainwarrior's patches. Other emulators may be using any of the other patch sets.

And, how precisely the VRC7 uses these patches to make sound isn't perfectly known how to emulate perfectly yet either. So FT and every emulator are only approximations until we know more about the VRC7

You means YM2143's Built-in patches are Different with VRC7's that.
Emulator-Developer don't know ORIGINAL VRC7's patches, so tried to make correct patches?

I understand. Thank you for your reply! :D

Yes, the YM2413 (the chip the VRC7's audio is a derivative of) uses different patches. Konami probably included their own patches because they thought they would suit the Lagrange Point better than the original ones, but we don't know for sure. Some of the patches are almost the same, too (only a couple of them though).

The YM2413's patch set, to the best of my knowledge, has been perfectly reverse-engineered. That is not the case for the VRC7; as Xyz said, rainwarrior's guesswork is the most accurate thing we have so far. And it's important to realise that having the proper patch set is an entirely different thing to emulating the chip properly. Perhaps the most blatant difference is the aliasing: try listening to a hardware recording of the beginning of Track 7 from Lagrange Point, then compare that to what that sounds like in various emulators (including FamiTracker). You'll see what I mean.
