0.5 beta 5 crashing upon startup

Postby Overlord99 » Sat Jan 02, 2016 12:21 am

So I tried to download the 0.5 beta 5 recently, but upon trying to open it, it gave me the following error message:

Code: Select all

This application has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Unhandled exception C000001D.

A memory dump file has been created (MiniDump_20160101-1716-v0_5_0_b5.dmp), please include this if you file a bug report!

Attempting to save current module as recover.ftm.

The "recover.ftm" it said it was producing never showed up, but I attached the memory dump file. I think this might be because my computer (an old Compaq from the early 2000s that's running Windows XP but is built for Windows 2000) isn't powerful enough to run it. I can't be sure, though. Help would be very much appreciated.

I've ran the beta on a Windows 95 machine (virtual of course), but still. I don't think it's your computer not being powerful enough, but maybe something about your computer itself which does not allow the program to run.

I dunno. Check Registry Editor for some weird keys from previous versions of FamiTracker and see if that's what may be causing the issue.
I have permanently switched to 0CC-FamiTracker. If and when JSR decides to update vanilla FamiTracker at this point is entirely out of the question for me.

I did find something interesting in the Registry Editor that I'm pretty sure is related to FamiTracker (unless this computer previously contained files for a completely different program that coincidentally endedd in .ftm). You get to it like this:

Code: Select all

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > .ftm > ShellNew

There are two keys in the ShellNew folder, called "Default" and "NullFile". I have no idea if this is normal or not, but that's mostly because I've sort of lost my touch when it comes to screwing around in the registry editor.

Exception 0xC000001D is raised when an illegal instruction is encountered. Thats probably because your CPU doesn't support SSE, MMX etc.

Are SSE, MMX, etc. something that's exclusive to the beta? 0.4.6 works just fine on my computer.

Idk. The dump file also doesn't reveal much information.
Why are you calling the folder 0.5 BITCH x)

Apparently jsr switched compilers for 0.5.0b. Maybe that's why?

He says it still works on XP, though.

Yes, but a new compiler might be making use of newer CPU extensions (the MMX/SSE/etc that roflo mentioned) that your PC doesn't support.

Ah, that makes sense. If that's the case, I suppose I'll stick with 0.4.6 for now. Thanks for the help!
