Semantic issue: DMC vs. DPCM

Postby sirocyl » Sat Jan 16, 2016 1:55 pm

So I've heard of the delta-modulated channel of the 2A03 referred to as DMC or DPCM, interchangeably, without regard to the context.

DMC, "Delta-modulated carrier" or "Delta-modulated channel" typically refers to the channel in the 2A03 which plays back DPCM samples.
DPCM, "delta-Pulse Code Modulation", typically refers to the actual format of the samples, the audio data in the instruments.

For instance, "Zxx modifies the delta counter value on the DMC channel" vs "Wxx changes the sample playback speed of the DPCM instrument".

From what I've heard, 0CC-FT refers to the channel as DMC.

It's just a minor point worth noting, perhaps for the next version of FT.

"on the DMC" = "on the DPCM channel"
Just save a little typing.

Though, DMC is the one that has double colloquial use as we'll sometimes say DMC to mean a sample in .dmc form

Yes, both these terms apply.
