Creepy Dungeon (VRC6)

Postby DietChugg » Fri Jul 28, 2017 7:47 pm

So I'm pretty new to making music but I really enjoyed making this one. I still only get the basics of music theory stuff. You could say I was inspired to make this after watching this cool video about making MegaMan 2 songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JknOdnEtwxs&t=401s

Let me know what you think.

I like this! It has a lot of potential. I edited a bit, added some bass, more melody and some more percussion.

The chief issue is your "Wave" instrument. It basically plays a whole-tone scale, which does not fit the mood (or key) of the rest of the song. It's also poorly balanced, effectively taking over the song for the whole time it's active. You also severely underused the VRC6. If you just need one channel, enable the FDS or N163; don't leave two entire channels silent the entire time!
The rest of the song is quite bland: no interesting melody, no cool harmonic ideas, nothing. The only interesting thing is the previously-mentioned whole-tone arpeggio and the extreme vibrato, neither of which help the song in any way. You also don't get the most out of your channels. As a challenge to yourself, try to create a song where all 4/5 channels are always playing something. It doesn't have to be more melodic stuff: you could also add echo effects or give a part some extra texture.
As for RGF's edits, they're also problematic. It's not mixed well at all, making the song a jumbled mess. You also failed to remove the whole-tone arpeggio, by far the worst part of the piece.

They may not be included in any similar collection "as they are" for sale or for free.
They may not be redistributed separately "as they are" in any store or on free sharing sites.
Elements on the images may not be made into tubes and resold or redistributed.
You may not use parts of these backgrounds to create competitive backgrounds for sale.

Teuthida You mention there is no interesting melody and no cool harmonic ideas. How would I go about making interesting melodies or cool harmonic ideas? (Note: I'm a beginner. So this may be a dumb question but any help is appreciated)
