[VRC6] Sonic the Hedgehog Remixes

Postby VolcanBrimstone » Sat Jun 27, 2015 10:26 am

I figure I should start posting some of my stuff here. I kinda want to share all my files here, mainly because I just like to share them. :D So I'll start with my favorite file. It contains many remixes of Sonic the Hedgehog music.
Here's a list of them all in the order that they are in the file [which is the order they were made in]:

Sonic 2: Oil Ocean Zone
Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Ice Cap Zone
Sonic 4 Ep. 2: Metal Sonic's Theme
Sonic 2: Sky Chase Zone
Sonic 2: Mystic Cave Zone
Sonic 2: Metropolis Zone
Sonic 1/Game Gear: Bridge Zone
Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Carnival Night Zone
Sonic 2: Death Egg Robot
Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Flying Battery Zone
Sonic 1: Starlight Zone
Sonic 2: Casino Night Zone
Sonic the Hedgehog 360 [2006]: His World/Solaris Phase II
Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Big Arm/Mecha Sonic
Sonic 3 & Knuckles/Pokémon GSC: MASHUP - Angel Island Zone Act II + Lucky Channel/Game Corner

I actually host all my files on Mediafire for my Youtube Audience to have access to usually, but I see you guys usually just post them as attachments on here. Not sure if the mediafire link would be ok so I'll just do the attachment.

...I'm sorry. I don't like this. At all.

The module as a whole suffers from serious balancing issues, the PCM is too loud, and the synth channels generally suffer from the same fate. The "changes" made to the songs don't serve to improve them, only to cloud the mixing and ruin what used to be well composed, well thought out songs. Dissonance is also a huge issue in these changes, as notes seem to have been changed for little to no reason in a poor attempt to make the songs sound different.

Speaking specifically about some of the songs:

The intro to Oil Ocean sounds really muddy and bad. The way the pulse channels were used here just does not work.

What is even going on with Ice Cap...

The lead in the remix of Metal Sonic's theme sounds horrible and hurts my ears, and the mixing here is really bad and muddy. Your sawtooth is too loud, almost universally. To get it out of the way, Flying Battery suffers from the same issues.

Honestly, I could go through and point out every single issue with every single one of these "remixes" (which are really just poor arrangements), but I've said the general problems. This needs a lot of work before I can consider it to be good.

Most, if not all, of the tracks within the module are too loud. The DPCM is sorely lacking, and a lot of the instrumentation is rather ear-splitting. Those who have "always loved your Sonic work" apparently need to develop fully-functioning ears if this is the standard to which you have made "remixes" before.
Sarumi is best ship; confirmed and manifested.

The insults are unnecessary. Avoid posting stuff like this again.

Lemme give some feedback on these one by one, because I think it's very much needed. If I would've seen the other posts, I would've been pretty confused and wouldn't have known where to get started with cleaning these remixes up. ;)

#1. A lot of stuff is out of tune. The bassline is inaccurate. Sawtooth is too loud and one octave too high than what I would've liked. Bad DPCM-drums
#2. Beginning sounds promising. Triangle changes octave. Lead is one octave too low. Sawtooth is too loud and often one octave too high than what I would've liked. Bad DPCM-samples.
#3. Haven't heard the original, but this sound way too confusing, and there's a ton of note clashing everywhere. Bad DPCM-samples
#4. Note clashing. Drum-samples are pretty ok actually. Too loud sawtooth. I did enjoy this one.
#5. Bad DPCM drums. Whatever that thing on 2A03's pulse 1 and 2 is, it has note clashing and way too loud volume for days. It's also one octave too low. Volume is generally very unbalanced. Sawtooth is too loud.
#6. Bad DPCM-samples. Volume balance needs work. Note clashing.
#7. Bad DPCM-samples. Note clashing. Sawtooth and VRC6 pulse 2 is way to loud and clashes too much for my taste. Sawtooth could be one octave lower throughout the whole song.
#8. Volume is unbalanced. Lead clashes unplesantly. Triangle bass too maybe.
#9. Please, just remove that triangle drum, it just doesn't work very well. Some notes, out of tune. Kind of lacking in many parts. Note clashing.
#10. Bad drums, both DPCM and noise. Note clashing. Unbalanced volume.
#11. I actually really enjoyed this one, but the last frame is really out of tune.
#12. Some instruments stay too long. Too loud sawtooth. Bad DPCM-samples. Note clashing in frame 2
#13. Never heard the original. Sawtooth is too loud in the beginning. Bad DPCM-samples. Overall unbalanced volume. Note clashing.
#14. Never heard the original. Note clashing. Annoying kick sample. Gotta say, pretty creative and nice use of the triangle channel.
#15. Note clashing. Quite confusing at some points. Bad bassline in most of the song. 2A03 pulse 1 and 2 play stuff that's not fitting during frames 03-0A

Well, that was a handful. These are not bad, but most of them need a lot of work to be able to be called "good". Most of them have many "game-breaking" problems that make them not so nice to listen to. I'd compare this to the many games that have bad launches nowadays due to being poorly tested. This doesn't make them bad games, just not very nice to play. *cough* ubisoft *cough* arkham knight *cough*
If you fix these "bugs", I'm sure this album would be pretty good.

Just for your convenience, here's a list of what you should keep in mind when making music in the future:
-Get good DPCM drums. :P
-Make sure the volume balance is good.
-Use the Pxx effect to avoid note clashing. P80 is normal.
-If you're using both the sawtooth and triangle for bass, make sure the sawtooth isn't too loud. Preferably below 8 if you can.

Hopefully I wasn't too harsh and you won't see me as rude. My sole purpose with this ginormous post was to help you, and I hope you'll see it that way! :)

Good luck! :D

Thank you all for the comments, regardless of what tone they come in as. Generally speaking I do this just for fun. Seeing as how I don't get these kinds of "harsh" comments on any of my Youtube videos, it's definitely a change of pace that I'm willing to accept.

Keeping what's said in mind; some of these songs haven't even been touched since they were made, Oil Ocean especially, so some of these are pretty poorly made even in my own opinion. In fact, more than half of these are at least 2 years old. I had a pretty good idea that I would see some negative comments and was actually kinda hoping for criticism where needed. The comment that ollaxe left is perfectly laid out, so thanks dude! :D

I came here to this forum to get better, and that's what I intend to do. Hopefully I can continue to do so with your feedback. While I take a few minutes to take this in, I'm going to post my more popular set of songs from my Youtube Channel in a different topic, just to keep it separate. I really do appreciate you guys taking your own time to listen and give feedback, even if you don't like what you hear.
