Mouser by Tony Young was one of the first homebrew games for NES. It was designed to run in NESticle; it isn't very compatible with an actual NES. But its background music ended up becoming a symbol of NES homebrew.
SPEED by Shawn Hargreaves is a vector shmup that won an Allegro SpeedHack competition, the predecessor to Ludum Dare.
Back in 2000, I covered the music of both games in Covers vol. 1 (dy-covers.nsf). The SPEED cover is straight, but the Mouser cover is what I imagined it might sound like if extended into actual game music. In October of last year, I ported both to FamiTracker using my current drum kit.
