there is white anti-aliasing on the smilies, regardless of the theme you use. is there any way to fix this or is it hardcoded into the forum software you guys are using?

It seems there's a problem with the black theme and smilies. I was unaware of that.

I don't think it's possible to have separate smilies for different styles, so I'm not sure if this is possible to fix.

Perhaps a better pack altogether would be a fix to consider. The default phpBB icons are pretty forgettable in my opinion (which is why I've elected to disable all of them in my posts). :p

I tried to make some. I haven't animated them though:

These have my support. The lack of shading fits with this being an 8-bit music forum and whatnot.

Did you already have these at hand or did you make these in the 45 minutes between the OP and your reply??

I made them some time ago to fit the dark theme, but I forgot about them until this topic popped up. Figured I might as well suggest them.

Yeah these looks good! To me personally it doesn't matter if they aren't animated.
I'd like to add them if you wish, but do you happen to have them as separate files?

I spent some time making separate .png files for each one. Check attachment
